The juxtaposition of the classical still-life
with a 21st Century American sensibility
is the subject of this piece.

This quilt was one of those unfinished projects that languished for years before being completed.
It was begun in 1992 with quite a different design.
It has since morphed in layout and absorbed some additional fabrics.  I like to think of the fishes swimming as deconstructing into cubist representations and then coalescing again as they leave the swathes of cubistic instability.

A denizen of the deepest ocean depths is depicted here. At these great depths, no light penetrates so the inhabitants must create their own sources of light via the intriguing process of bioluminescence. This is represented in this piece by several means from Angelina Fiber use to glittery thread. The jellyfish appears on a background of light absorbing black wool fabric—no reflection or shimmers for the water at these depths. See the early April, 2009 posts of my blog for a step by step documentation of the creation of this piece: (Elizabeth's Blog)
