Nocturnal Sojourn In Russian folk tales, Baba Yaga is a wise but dangerous crone who possesses much magic and knowledge of the natural world, particularly herbs. Her hut is also formidable and walks about on giant chicken legs and is ringed by a fence made of human bones and skulls. To approach Baba Yaga and entreat her for help one must first locate her hut, no mean feat since it magically appears in a different location throughout the world each morning. It is generally supposed that the hut spends the night walking to each new locale, but I represent an alternative option here. If the hut is so magical in the first place, can it not just appear wherever it is fated to be? I propose that the hut and Baba Yaga replenish their magical powers at night in a mysterious, mountainous land under a thin new moon and at sunrise rush to their next destination restored by their nocturnal sojourn. |
